Our Meadow Project is based on a lot of data that we collected. We wanted to see which of the grassland bird species were most widespread and which were most frequent. We also gave a survey to learn about people's attitudes and knowledge. We wanted to understand how people felt about nature and the outdoors because this would help us understand why there might be problems and how difficult they might be to solve. We quizzed them to see how familiar they were with the grassland bird species. |

| Student-Adult Interest Survey Findings: Interest Survey Summary ¨ Adult interests vary more than students. ¨ Reading was rated highest by adults but lowest by students. ¨ A nature walk was rated 2nd highest by adults and 2nd lowest by students. ¨ Adults rated video games the lowest. ¨ Students rated sports dramatically higher than any other activity. ¨ Camping, another outdoor nature activity, was not highly ranked by either. Our Question: ¨ Does the much lower ranking of Nature Walks by students mean they will be less concerned about nature in the future?

| The following conclusions come from an interest survey that we administered to over 100 students in 7th grade and over 100 adults from the same community. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Child-Adult Knowledge Survey The following conclusions come from a knowledge survey that we administered to 89 students in 7th grade and 64 adults from the same community. We asked them to pick out from a list of 20 common bird species the 4 species of birds that were clearly meadow or grassland species. Summary of Meadow Bird Knowledge Adult Survey (64 adults) Ø No adult was able to pick out all 4 meadow birds. Ø Only 6 adults could name 3 of the meadow species. Ø 17% of the adults could not name even 1 meadow bird. Ø 39% of the adults could only name 1 meadow species. Ø Only 34% of adults could recognize a Northern Bobwhite as a meadow species.
Summary of Meadow Bird Knowledge Child Survey (89 children) Ø No child was able to name all 4 meadow birds. Ø Only one child could name 3 meadow bird species. Ø 43% of the children could name only 1 meadow bird. Ø Only 15% of the children could recognize the Northern Bobwhite as a meadow species. Ø 40% of the children couldn’t name even 1 meadow species.

| The following conclusions come from a species survey that we did in the summer of 2006. As a part of the MD/DC Breeding Bird Atlas Project, we helped survey 30 of the 51 atlas blocks in Queen Anne's County. In each block we identified and tallied every meadow species we heard. From this data we can tell which birds are most numerous and which are most widespread.
