About CMS

Centreville Middle School is the largest of the four middle schools in Queen Anne's County. It is located on Ruthsburg Road (Rt. 304) next to the Queen Anne's County High School and houses grades six through eight. (See Map below.) The students come from north of Centreville to as far south Queenstown, encompassing a broad spectrum of social and economic diversities. At the current time our enrollment for school year 2011-2012 is roughly around 525. The school also has an active school improvement team composed of teachers, counselors, administrators, business partners, and parents.

Centreville Middle School is designed around instructional teams: Grade 6, Grade 7, Grade 8, and the Unified Arts Team. Our Unified Arts program is comprised of Art, Music, Spanish, Basic Keyboarding, and Wellness (Physical Education and Nutritional Science). The teams are interdisciplinary, and the teachers on each team share a common planning time.

As a school, we are focusing on reading and writing across the content areas of math, science, social students, and language arts. The challenge we face is preparing incoming students to exit three years later ready to perform at the expected high school level. We are consistently raising the bar of excellence and the expectations for all students.

Staff Development is a key component to enable teachers to meet the diverse needs of our students. Weekly meetings are held with all staff members for on-going staff development and collaborative planning. We make an effort to engage students in all aspects of learning. Instruction includes, but is not limited to, the following areas: direct teaching, cooperative groups, independent research, student presentations, technology, re-teaching, guided practice, and enrichment. CMS students consistently score high on the MSA tests, measuring student achievement in the core subjects. In the 2010-2011 school year, almost 90.3% of CMS students scored Satisfactory or Advanced on the Reading Test with 55% scoring as Advanced. In Math 86% scored Satisfactory or Advanced with over 33% scoring Advanced. Click here to see the actual scores.

There is also opportunity for CMS students to begin to take high school subjects in Math and Spanish. These students consistently pass the Maryland High School Assessment in Algebra I and earn high school credits for Geometry and Spanish I.

We also believe that discipline is essential for student achievement and school safety.  School and county policies regarding behavior, dress, use of cell phones and other forms of electronics are strictly enforced. The environment of the school and the focus on academic achievement along with the social and emotional development of each child relies on student compliance with all school policies along with parent support and involvement.

Centreville Middle School is about excellence and student achievement. In addition to standardized testing students regularly achieve recognition in many areas receiving many awards in areas such as Instrumental Band, Chorus, Art, Physical Fitness, Writing, Science, Reading, and Speaking, just to name a few.  Opportunities are provided for field trips, guest speakers/performers, and assemblies to enrich the visual and performing arts and the core content areas. College campus visitations are also provided at various times during the year. Students are also totally responsible for the photography, writing, producing of their own yearbook, and website design. Some of the webpages are designed by students.
