We are anxious to begin a new and exciting year! Physical Education is an integral part of your child’s total educational program. Studies show that students who participate in physical activity each day, exhibit improved memory, concentration, communication, problem solving, and leadership abilities; which improve their learning in other subject areas. Such students also display more positive attitudes towards themselves, improved interpersonal behavior, and willingness to meet and deal with challenges of daily life. This letter was prepared for the purpose of informing you of the policies and procedures of the Centreville Middle School Physical Education program. In this letter we will discuss the dress code, grading policy, locker room procedures, and excuses from physical education class. Personal safety and injury prevention is an essential component of the physical education curriculum. It is imperative that your child wear clothing that will not hinder their ability to perform physical activities on the day their class has physical education. Students are required to change clothes for their physical education class. A change of clothes may consist of a plain white T-shirt and a pair of dark shorts (no jean shorts). CMS T-shirts and shorts are available to purchase from the P.E. Dept. for $25 a set or $15 each. As colder weather approaches students must be dressed appropriately for outside activities with sweatshirts and/or warm-ups. The Phys. Ed. Dept. also has CMS sweatshirts and sweatpants available to purchase for $45 a set ($25 sweatshirt and $20 sweatpants). These will be available for purchase later in the fall. In addition please help your child select appropriate footwear that has rubber soles and can be secured tightly. Shoes with laces that are tied are recommended. Students may not wear Crocs or open toe-shoes such as clogs, flip-flops, sandals. Lockers with a lock will be provided for each student to store their physical education clothing. Students are responsible for their own clothes and personal belongings. There will be a $3.50 charge for any lost lock. In addition we suggest that students take their physical education clothing home for laundering at least once a week. Participation is a key expectation in physical education. Please notify your child’s Physical Education teacher immediately if your child has any medical problems or conditions that may hinder his/her participation in physical education (asthma, diabetes, heart condition, etc.) Requests made by parents to excuse their child from physical education class must be made in writing. A notification form from a doctor is required if your child sustains an injury or illness that prohibits their participation for 2 days or more. For extended excuses, a release form from a doctor will be required for your child to resume participating in class. As always our main objective is to enhance each student’s life by helping them to understand the importance of physical fitness, nutrition, health, and by helping to develop the basic movement they require to participate in physical activities throughout their lives. We are looking forward to a rewarding year with your child. Please feel free to contact us at school via telephone or email should there be any questions concerning our program or policies.
Respectfully, Mr. Mike Kern & Mrs. Stanton |
