A Friendly Letter

 

Suggested Time: 45 minutes

To identify the parts of a letter

To use invented spelling type a letter

    a. Write to express personal ideas using drawings, symbols, letters, or words

              b. Contribute to a shared writing experience or topic of interest

 

Maryland Technology Literacy Standards for Students:

Standard  4.0 - Technology for Communication and Expression:  Use technology to communicate information and express ideas using various media formats

B.    Expression

       1.  Explore and use technology in an instructional setting to express ideas

          a. Use multimedia tools to express original ideas with print, drawings,

    digital images, sounds, and/or personal recordings

 

Resources Needed:

LCD Projector

A friendly letter activity page

 

Links to Prior Knowledge:

Discuss reasons for writing a letter to a friend. (i.e. write about summer plans, to thank someone, to share news)

 

Procedures:

  1. Go to the resource page and click on A Friendly Letter and put it on the big screen using the LCD projector for all of the students to see.
  2. Go over each step for making a friendly letter.
  3. Give a brief explanation for each step and show the children where each part of the letter will go. (i.e. the date in field 1 and the greeting in field 2)
  4. Now have the children make their own letters.
  5. Have the students go to the resource page and click on A Friendly Letter.
  6. Work together on step 1 and 2 of the letter to get the children started. Then have the children complete the rest of the letter.
  7. Once the children have completed the letter have him/her print the letter. Then have the children take it home to share it with the person they wrote it to.

 

 

Assessment:

The students will use invented spelling to write a friendly letter.

 

Accommodations:

Students may need assistance typing the letter.

 

Extensions:

Students may add pictures to their letter.
