2.  Technology Basics

  All About Me

 a.       This lesson should be used at the beginning of the year.

 b.      This lesson is an introduction of how to open and save a document.

 c.    This lesson will also receive an introduction to looping a Power Point.

 

 

Computer Basics and Appropriate Practices (MS PowerPoint, MS Word)

a.        This lesson should be taught at the beginning of the year.

b.       Students will view a PowerPoint show about computer basics and appropriate practices and then create a quiz to be presented to an adult.

 

 

Practice with Microsoft Word Right Clicking (MS Word)

             a.    This lesson provides a review to using Microsoft Word and introduces the options

                    associated with right clicking within a document.

 

Practice with Microsoft Excel Creating a Table (MS Excel)

             a.    This lesson provides a review to using Excel and teaches the students how to select the

      appropriate type of graph for a set of data.

 

Kids Copyright Laws (MS PowerPoint, MS Word)

 a.    This will provide students an overview of the copyright laws and what they mean.

 b.    This lesson can be completed near the beginning of the school year.

 c.    Students will view a MS PowerPoint show and then answer True/False Questions.

 

 

     Kidspiration

 a.    Four tutorials for the teacher to guide the students through on how to use Kidspiration.

 

 

Technology and Society (Kidspiration, MS PowerPoint)

     a.    Students will analyze various forms of technology.

     b.    Students will think about how technology has affected their lives using Kidspiration to make a web.

 

 

3.  Language Arts/Reading

 

ABC Order (MS PowerPoint, MS Excel)

a.    This is meant to be a review of how to put words into alphabetical order.

b.    This lesson should be completed near the beginning of the school year.

c.        Students will view a MS PowerPoint show and then complete an activity on the computer.

 

American Stories Tour of Ellis Island (MS PowerPoint, MS Word)

a.    Complete after reading A Very Important Day

b.    Students tour an interactive program about Ellis Island and then write a Journal Entry, in MS Word, from the standpoint of an

       immigrant.

 

Antonyms and Synonyms (MS PowerPoint, MS Word)

a.    Students will play an interactive game reviewing antonyms and synonyms.

b.    They will then complete a pre-made worksheet in MS Word.

 

 

Chris Van Allsburg /Writing a Friendly Letter (MS PowerPoint, MS Word)

a.    Should be completed after reading The Stranger.

b.    Lesson 1 ~ Students will visit a website to learn about Chris Van Allsburg and take notes about what they learn.

c.    Lesson 2 ~ Students will use their notes to type a friendly letter to Chris Van Allsburg using MS Word.

 

 

 

Miles to Freedom (MS PowerPoint, MS Word, MS Excel, Kidspiration)

    a.        Complete with Maryland Unit. 

    b.        Similar topic as the Underground Railroad, with more details and choices for students to make.

   c.           Pre-Lesson 1 ~ Students will create a simple table within MS Word that will provide them with a note-taking sheet to use during their project.

                     Lesson 1 ~ students and teacher create a KWL chart in Kidspiration/Inspiration.  Students then read the story Following the Footsteps.

   d.       Lesson 2 ~ Students and teacher revise KWL chart and then view a story map.  Students then create their own story map using Kidspiration/Inspiration

    e.        Lesson 3 ~ Students use the interactive timeline to answer questions about slavery in Maryland.

    f.         Lesson 4 ~ Students use the interactive timeline and MS Excel to list and graph the number of slaves in Maryland

 

Parts of Speech (MS PowerPoint)

   a.         Students will review nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns, adverbs by completing a “Wacky Web Tale” online (similar to Mad Lib).

   b.        Students may select from a variety of different tales

 

  

Persuasive Writing With Akiak (MS Word, MS PowerPoint)

    a.        This lesson should be taught after students have read the story, Akiak.

    b.       Students will read two articles about sled dogs.

    c.        Students will complete an online tutorial about persuasive writing and then write a persuasive essay about the Iditarod, answering the   

          question, “Is forcing dogs to race in the Iditarod cruelty to animals?”

 

Pioneer Life (MS PowerPoint, MS Word)

  a.     Complete after reading Skylark OR Sarah Plain and Tall

  b.     Students will complete a Web Quest to learn about life as a pioneer.

  c.    Students will then pretend they are living life as a pioneer.  They will use the information they learned on the WebQuest to make a recipe card and select 3 toys they would take on their journey.

  d.      Use a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast life as a pioneer and life today.

 

 

Titanic (MS PowerPoint)   

        a.   Students will search various sites, learn to cite the site and create a short PowerPoint on the Titanic

 

Types of Sentences (MS PowerPoint)

  a.       Students will play an interactive game reviewing questions, statements, exclamations and commands.

  b.      Students will then edit sentences on the computer.

 

4.  Social Studies

 

 

ABCs of Famous Marylanders (MS PowerPoint, MS Word)

     a.    This lesson allows students to research famous Marylanders.

      b.    Students will be given a person to research and then will create a paragraph about that person.

      c.    Lesson 1 ~ Introduction, students begin researching information

      d.        Lesson 2 ~ Students type their report in MS Word

      e.        Lesson 3 ~ Students revise using spell-check and peer conferences.  Students draw a picture of their person.

 

Landscape Lingo (MS Excel, MS Word)

     a.    Complete with Maryland Unit

            b.    Students will design a park.  They have a budget and guidelines detailing items “needed” and items that are “optional”. 

            c.    Students will create an Excel Spreadsheet showing the total cost of their park before they cut and paste the pictures to   

                    create a map of the park.

 

 

Maryland Brochure (MS PowerPoint, MS Word, MS Excel)

     a.       Students will work within a group to complete the brochure on the different Maryland Regions.

      b.      Lesson 1, students will review the rubric, create a title page in MS Word.  Students will copy and paste pictures and clipart.

      c.       Lesson 2, students will research information and continue to create their brochures. 

      d.      Lesson 3, students will complete the research and creation of their brochure. 

 

 

 

Maryland Web Quest ( MS PowerPoint, MS Word)

     a.    This lesson provides a preview of Maryland Facts such as state symbols, famous Marylanders, capital, etc. 

      b.    Students will use the links to answer questions on a printed worksheet 

      c.    This activity should be completed when students begin learning information contained in the Maryland Unit.

c.       First, students will complete a scavenger hunt.

d.   Then they will complete an activity allowing them to pretend to be someone from St. Mary’s City.  They will answer questions about the responsibilities of their character.

 

 

Taking a Survey (MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)

a.       Students will make survey questions to ask their classmates.  They will then use a pre-made spreadsheet to tally their data.

b.      Students will display the data in MS Excel using a pre-made Pie Graph and Bar-Graph

 

 

Technology and Society (Kidspiration, MS PowerPoint)

a.            Students will analyze various forms of technology.

b.           Students will think about how technology has affected their lives using Kidspiration to make a web.

 

Underground Railroad ( MS PowerPoint)

a.       Complete with Maryland Unit

b.      Students will identify themselves as a slave and make choices while viewing an interactive program teaching them about the life of a slave escaping through the Underground Railroad.

c.       Optional:  Students may answer questions reflecting on explain what they would have done to help the slaves.

 

 

 

     Woodland Indian Village (MS PowerPoint, MS Word)

 

  1. Complete with Maryland Unit
  2. Lesson 1 ~ Students create a table in MS Word to record information about Woodland Indians. 
  3. Lesson 2 ~ Students tour an interactive program of a Woodland Indian Village to complete the table made in Lesson 1.

 

5.  Math

a.  Complete with Maryland Unit

Multiplication Practice (MS PowerPoint)

a.             Students will practice their multiplication facts on the computer using an interactive flash card game.

b.            They will then play Multiplication Concentration to continue practicing their skills.

c.             Finally, students can create their own flash cards to practice their facts.
