GES is named National Title 1 Distinguished School
At the State Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, December 14, Grasonville Elementary was named the 2010-2011 National Title 1 Distinguished School for Sustained Academic Excellence. Four hundred Title 1 schools participated in the 2009 - 2010 Maryland School Assessment (MSA). After comparing MSA data for the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school years, GES scored highest in Category 1 - exceptional student performance for two or more consecutive years.
Title 1, Part A is the largest federally funded education program which provides schools and school districts with high concentrations of students who are economically disadvantaged with funding to allow them to obtain supplemental resources to enhance their educational programs. At its core, Title 1, Part A should be used to enhance reading, mathematics, and science programs for students who are not performing to state standards. Distinguished Title 1 schools go beyond what is mandated in the statute.
At the State BOE meeting, Mrs. Leaverton highlighted the exceptional staff of GES, as well as the close monitoring of students and the use of data as factors leading to the school's success. She told the Board that the staff and the GES Community would be humbled and pleased with this recognition. The Instructional Team from GES will represent the school at the Title 1 Conference in Tampa, Florida where they will be recognized along with Distinguished Schools from around the United States.
