Check out MSA on mdk12.org/
The Maryland School Assessment (MSA) for Reading will be given on Tuesday, March 13th and Wednesday, March 14th. The MSA measures how well children are learning so that parents and educators can be sure that every child has the opportunity to succeed. Along with other measures (such as homework, classwork, quizzes, and projects), the MSA provides information about students’ academic progress—information that can help teachers and parents better support students’ school work.
The reading MSA tests three topic areas: general reading processes, informational text comprehension, and literary text comprehension. The test includes multiple-choice and written-response questions. If you would like to see sample MSA questions, go to mdk12.org/
If you would like to help your child prepare for the Reading MSA you could visit the mdk12.org/ website and see sample questions and you could work on these 8 indicators at home with your child. These 8 indicators have been tested and retested on MSA:
Main Idea – theme or topic to which all other paragraphs, sentences, and details directly
support.
Directly Stated – looking back in the text to support your answer with information
you have read.
Inference/Drawing Conclusions – reading information, combining it with what
you already know, and making a final decision
about what has happened.
Predictions- skill that requires using what you already know, previous
experiences, and facts and details. Then, you must apply that
information to new situations in order to make logical, well-reasoned
predictions about what might happen next.
Paraphrase- explaining information from another source in your own words.
Summarize- action of restating in a concise form what the author has said. The
main idea of the passage must be retained, but elaboration should be
eliminated.
Connect to personal experience-relating what you are reading to what you
already know and from experiences in your own life.
Please take advantage of the website mdk12.org/ to become familiar with MSA testing. If you should have any other questions, please feel free to email Mrs. Dryer, Reading Specialist, at jennifer.dryer@qacps.org.
