QACHS MEDIA CENTER MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Queen Anne’s County High School library media center is to ensure that all members of the school community are competent, critical, and ethical users of information. Students are encouraged and prepared to be life-long learners.

 

This mission is accomplished by:

  • Providing instruction in information literacy
  • Providing intellectual and physical access to informational materials in a variety of formats and media
  • Promoting the use of the media center by the school community
  • Working with and collaborating with teachers to develop educational strategies to meet the information needs of students and augment teaching
  • Supporting the school’s curriculum and reading initiatives
  • Cultivating diverse reading interests

HOURS

The media center is is open

7:20 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday -Thursday

7:20 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Friday

Students may use the media center for studying, homework or reading before school, after school and at lunch. Please sign in and out when entering and leaving the media center during those times. During class hours, a pass from your teacher is required.

EXPECTATIONS

The library media center is designated as a place for studying, doing homework and reading. We expect that students will:

  • Talk quietly and respect those around them
  • Leave food, candy and drinks outside the media center
  • No cell phones allowed
  • Use computers appropriately, adhering to the school district's acceptable use policy

  • 20,000+ cataloged items including books, videotapes, periodicals, CD-ROMS
  • Online catalog available school wide
  • Many CD-ROM and online databases
  • Interlibrary loans (allow up to two weeks to receive materials)
  • Internet research

 

BORROWING PROCEDURES

All students are encouraged to use the media center and borrow materials. Generally speaking students are not restricted as to the number of books or periodicals that may be borrowed. Books in the regular collection may be checked out for two weeks. Reference books, audio-visual items and back issues of magazines may be checked out overnight or until the next school day. . It is important that all materials be returned on time. Books and magazines may be renewed, but the item must be presented in order to be renewed. Students and staff may request that items be placed on reserve. Overdue fines are charged at the rate of 5 cents per day for books, and 25 cents per day for reference books and other overnight items. Fines are not charged during holidays, weekends, or other times when school is not open.

SERVICES

Your success in school is our first priority! The staff provides individual research assistance, book suggestions, computer instruction, laminating (fee charged), videotaping, and assistance with transparencies and other audio visual productions. Supplies such as markers, colored pencils, scissors, glue and rulers are available. A copy machine for student use is located in the front of the media center. Xerox copies are ten cents. Color printing is available for .75 per page.
